What I’m Reading (and listening to)

Between the collective joy of the Knicks championship run and the World Cup mania, I can’t stop thinking about about and sharing Watch Party Urbanism (Matt Choi) and Everything Is TV Now - Including Cities (Diana Lind).
In the words of my friend, Emma, “Teen takeovers are the symptom, not the problem.” We’ve completely designed them out of public spaces and now, Teens hit summer break with nowhere left to go (Axios).

Book of the Month

In the United States and Canada, we bang the drum incessantly about “clean and safe” as the foundation for vibrant cities. But I spent nine days in Berlin last month and one thing that struck me about my experience was how cleanliness did not factor into whether or not I felt safe. At all.

In fact, some of the neighborhoods that felt the most safe were the grittiest, most graffiti-covered places without a coordinating set of street furniture in sight. What made these places safe was not cleanliness, but activation. Because where there are other people, there is often the perception of safety.

What if we relaxed about “clean and safe” and leaned into empowering residents more? What kind of creativity could be unleashed if people didn’t need to spend $6,000 and 6 months of paperwork to get a permit to activate the street? What would happen to our neighborhoods if we loosened the reigns and truly gave space to the public? Messy Cities, edited by Dylan Reid, Zahra Ebrahim, Leslie Woo, and John Lorinc, examines questions like these.
