This Must Be: The Update

This week’s email is coming to you on a Friday, instead of the typical Monday. It’s late because I was traveling to attend the funeral of my grandfather-in-law, Charlie. Charlie was kind, curious, and an excellent conversationalist. He was the type of person who could talk to anyone about anything. He valued hard work, loved his family, and always had room for dessert.

I spend a lot of time thinking about community. Part of my job at the Downtown Denver Partnership is to build community among our members. Our team does this through various means, but one of the most important is gathering. And not just one-off gatherings, but regular, consistent gatherings where you can see the same people over and over. 

We host monthly Community Coffee Hours where the stakes are low (no registration required), there’s free coffee (thank you, sponsors), and the facilitation is minimal. The rest is just people connecting. 

Civic engagement and community-building are a lot like working out. You can’t expect to get in shape by going to the gym one time, right? It’s the same with community-building. You have to keep showing up. 

With that said, I’m kicking off regular meetups for Denver-area readers of the newsletter. The format and timing may evolve, but I’m starting with a happy hour because, frankly, it’s easy. The goal? Build a community of like-minded placemakers here in Denver by gathering routinely. If you’re local, you can register here.
