Public space is inherently political. Who gets to occupy it, for how long, and with whom? These are some of the questions we, as placemakers, answer every day. As someone who believes deeply in the value of publicness, it would be irresponsible not to join the chorus of voices supporting the people of Minneapolis and opposing the terrorism of ICE. What’s happening in Minneapolis and across the United States is not new. From chattel slavery to American Indian residential schools and Jim Crow, the separation of families, the terrorizing of entire communities, and the senseless murder of those deemed threats to white supremacy are as American as apple pie. It is our shared responsibility—and moral imperative—as both placemakers and human beings to work toward a more just and equitable nation. Placemaking includes producing festivals, planting trees, hanging banners, and designing plazas. It also includes upholding the right to peaceably assemble. This Must Be The Place continues to be a resource for people seeking opportunities to design, steward, and defend public space. With that said, take care of yourselves and your neighbors.
